Pledged Amount & Breakdown
Support Persatuan Aktivis Sahabat Alam to provice community training, establish farms & nurseries for Orang Asli communities in Titiwangsa Forest Complex. Every contribution directly empowers Orang Asli communities toward food security, climate resilience, and economic growth.
1. Series of climate resilience agricultural practice = RM30,000
2. Establishment of community farm system = RM50,000
Total = RM80,000
The campaign is targeting to empower 17 villages across Perak and Kelantan, benefitting over 5000 households.
7 Orang Asli communities in Simpang Pulai - Kinta, Perak:
- Kampung Kerawat, Kampung Pergom, Kampung Lalang, Kampung Beringin, Kampung Juang, Kampung Sinju, Kampung Pos Raya
10 Orang Asli communities in Gua Musang, Kelantan:
- Kuala Betis, Kampung Bering, Kampung Gawin, Pos Simpor, Kampung Angkek, Kuala Wias, Pos Gob, Pos Balar, Pos Belatim & Pos Bihai.
Risk & Challenges
We have determined the potential risk & challenges after known the project beneficiaries for the past 8 years. Empowering the Orang Asli in the project activities aimed at strengthening the capacity of selected communities presents several risks and challenges which include: Participation and commitment may be hindered by overlapping of works especially they have other commitment to sustain their short-term income instead of committing on the long term profitable activities. Therefore, the training program will provide per diem or allowance replacement to bind & attract their active participation on this, and also pre-project mobilization & engagement will be done to convince them to join onboard. Methodology effectiveness also poses a challenge. Cultural factors, historical experiences, and a potential resistance to adopting modern agricultural practices and integrated sustainable farming systems, which may be perceived as conflicting with their traditional methods. The success of climate-resilient agricultural practices and forest enrichment methods depends on the Orang Asli's understanding and acceptance. However, since they are suffering enough with the impact of climate change, we are optimist they will able to adapt to new method & practice, in fact the introduction of climate resilience farming also are integrated with their traditional practice since the old years, it’s not totally strange for them. Comprehension and communication barriers may arise due to language differences or varying levels of literacy within the communities, potentially impeding the effective dissemination of information and instruction. To overcome these challenges, we already empowered some of the community coordinator who are expert in our past project to facilitate to program module as well. Logistic and access challenges, especially in remote areas like Gua Musang, may hinder the implementation of initiatives, making it difficult to provide necessary resources, support, and training. However, the training program are outside their village, which we will compensate & subsidize them to travel outside to gather in one place. Overcoming these challenges requires a culturally sensitive approach, involving the active participation of the Orang Asli in decision-making processes, tailored communication strategies, addressing logistical hurdles, and ensuring equitable access to resources, ultimately fostering genuine commitment to the initiatives focused on enhancing food security, climate adaptability, and socio-economic development.
Campaign Description/Rational of the campaign
The Orang Asli communities in Titiwangsa Forest Complex (Perak & Pahang) are facing the rapid degradation of their livelihood & natural resources from massive deforestation, encroachment & unsustainable activities. At the same time, climate change impact had worsened this circumstance, which contribute to frequent extreme weather & altered weather pattern. Thus, they ability to produce their own food from the community farm are disturbed by the inconsistent water supply, extreme flooding, nutrient loss & wildlife encroachment. At the same time their practice on harvesting of forest foods through seasonal hunting, wild vegetables harvesting, collection of traditional fruits, medicinal plants and other food resources also are threatened over the past years.
Therefore, this campaign intends to empower the selected Orang Asli Communities in Kinta, Perak & Gua Musang, Kelantan to strengthen the food security, climate change adaptability & socioeconomy through strengthen the Orang Asli communities in Simpang Pulai - Kinta, Perak food production from their traditional farming land through the implementation of climate resilience agricultural practice by implementing and establishing modern & integrated sustainable farming system & facilities. The rationale is to produce their local food consistently & sustainably, resilience from climate change impact. 1 community training & site visits will be conducted to learn the climate resilience agricultural practice at the existing practice done by other communities in Pahang & Klang Valley to sharpen & strengthen their theory & practical understanding of such action in order the achieve the project result effectively.
